Daryl brought grace and tranquility to the rehearsal process. His classical training and natural musicality made even his most ordinary movements sing. He patiently taught his movements and calmly experimented with lifts and group patterns, while we valiantly tried to look as smooth and graceful as Daryl.

Subsided Vortices is a pure movement piece. At every rehearsal, Daryl would come in with another connection to underpin the movement. He used images of dolphins in a David Attenborough documentary, he found text bursting with heaving seas, he spoke of rock climbing and trekking and seaweed tumbling in the waves.

There are moments when we are looking over the edge of the cliff, dipping our hands into our chalk bag to make sure we don’t slip, tying up our boots and sipping water from the waterfall. Below the surface of the movement is the constant ebb and flow of the waves crashing on the shore.
